Acoustic Design for Productive Workspaces
Transforming Space: Light, Air, and Acoustic Calm
Engaged by QBuild as lead consultants, Burleigh Beach Designs undertook the challenge of re-purposing an existing 200sqm tenancy within the Gold Coast Performance Centre precinct into a modern administration hub. The primary goal was to dismantle existing partitions and create an open-plan office environment, maximising the penetration of natural light deep into the floor plate.
A significant constraint was the office's location adjacent to high-noise generators: an open-air gym and a large group training room with powerful audio systems. Understanding the detrimental impact excessive noise can have on staff well-being and productivity, acoustic performance became a critical design driver.
Design Response
We collaborated closely with specialist acoustic engineers, conducting thorough testing to inform a targeted design strategy. Solutions focused on creating a 'box-within-a-box' concept to isolate the office environment:
- Specification of high-performance acoustic insulation within walls and ceiling cavities.
- Carefully designed mechanical ventilation systems engineered to minimise sound transfer.
- Acoustically rated glazing and entry doors for the new shopfront, ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations through coordination with fire and electrical engineers.
- Thoughtful placement of internal acoustic treatments to manage reverberation within the open-plan space.
The result is a quiet, light-filled workspace that stands in stark contrast to its noisy surroundings, providing QBuild staff at the GCPC with a comfortable and productive environment.
