Child-Focused Educational Space
Child-Centred Design for Active Learning
Located within the Gold Coast Performance Centre's campus, this childcare facility needed to integrate with an existing building while creating a safe, stimulating environment for children of varying ages. Burleigh Beach Designs was engaged to develop the interior architectural concept and detailing, from initial planning through to final implementation.
The space transforms throughout the day with the Queensland sunlight, creating a dynamic environment that introduces children to concepts of light, shadow, and natural rhythm while supporting different modes of play and learning.
Design Response
Our approach centered on creating a child-focused space that would support development through thoughtful spatial planning and material selection. Working within the constraints of an existing building envelope, we re-imagined the layout to create a sequence of interconnected spaces that balance supervision requirements with age-appropriate activity zones.
A key feature is the central common area, designed as a multi-functional heart for gathering, play, and performance. Wrapped in curved timber battens that create a sense of enclosure while maintaining visual connection, this space incorporates custom-designed seating nooks and reading corners to provide children with a sense of both independence and security.
The material palette was carefully selected to bring natural elements indoors, with sustainably sourced timber, non-toxic finishes, and natural textiles. Large windows were strategically placed to maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing energy consumption while creating a visual connection to the Gold Coast's outdoor environment. Custom joinery throughout accommodates a range of storage needs while maintaining child-accessible heights and safety features.
