The quintessential Gold Coast beach house holds a special place in Queensland's architectural story, representing a simpler, relaxed connection to our coastal environment. This project involved the thoughtful renovation and extension of one such original home, carefully balancing the desire for modern amenity with a deep respect for the dwelling's inherent character.
The owners' brief was clear: create contemporary living spaces, including a new living room seamlessly connected to an outdoor pool and entertaining area, plus a private master bedroom suite. Critically, they were adamant that the home's original form and street presence remain untouched, preserving its contribution to the neighbourhood character.
Design Response: Seamless Integration
Leveraging the depth of the block, our design solution focused on a discreet rear extension. To maintain the integrity of the original facade, the existing roof pitch facing the street was retained. At the rear, a contemporary skillion roof was introduced for the extension, a transition deliberately concealed from frontal views.
This careful transition preserves the home's heritage street presence while creating modern living spaces that open generously to the pool deck, forging the crucial indoor-outdoor connection essential for contemporary coastal living.
Materiality & Construction
Exposed beams feature throughout the extension, referencing traditional construction techniques while adding visual interest. The material palette was carefully selected to create a harmonious dialogue between the original structure and the new addition, ensuring the extension feels like a natural evolution of the home.
This project demonstrates our commitment to context-sensitive design, proving that contemporary family needs can be met while celebrating and preserving the unique legacy of the Gold Coast beach house.
