Responding to Context: Hinze Dam Views
Perched beside the impressive Hinze Dam wall and Visitor Centre, View Café offers patrons stunning panoramic vistas of the water and surrounding Gold Coast Hinterland. Our brief was to upgrade the existing front-of-house area, creating a more sophisticated and welcoming destination dining experience that honours its unique location and complements the building's robust off-form concrete and steel structure.
Natural timbers and elegant herringbone tiles create a warm, sophisticated hospitality space that complements the raw concrete architecture while evoking the movement of water in the Gold Coast hinterland setting.
Design Response
The design concept focused on creating visual interest and warmth while referencing the natural environment. Natural timbers were selected as a key material to provide a tactile contrast to the raw concrete walls. This is most evident in the bespoke wall cabinets designed for beverage display; their sculpted, undulating forms evoke the movement of water and waves, directly acknowledging the café's lakeside setting.
Wall finishes were upgraded with elegant herringbone tiles, adding texture and a refined pattern to the servery backdrop. New signage was implemented to enhance brand identity and improve visibility. The layout was carefully considered to create an intuitive flow for customers and staff, resulting in a modern, sophisticated venue that invites patrons to relax and enjoy the exceptional views.
