Steeped in the character of the original Gold Coast beach shack, this contemporary Mermaid Beach home celebrates both heritage and the leisurely rhythm of coastal life. The design subtly recalls classic coastal forms through simple rectilinear volumes, breezeways, and generous overhangs, elevated to a modern standard of comfort and spatial flow. Refined detailing and high-performance materials ensure resilience and longevity in the demanding maritime environment.

Design Response: Indoor-Outdoor Continuum & Climate

Key to the design intent is a strong indoor–outdoor continuum, reminiscent of how earlier beach houses embraced the breeze and blurred boundaries between living spaces and the natural surrounds. Large sliding doors, wraparound decks, and sheltered outdoor seating create seamless transitions, channeling the ocean air and connecting occupants to the coastal atmosphere.

Materiality & Atmosphere

Materially, subtle nods to the past—such as timber battens and potentially breezeblock screen walls—play off the building’s clean lines, lending a timeless, local feel. Touches of modern texture and colour brighten the façades, underscoring a relaxed coastal lifestyle. Internally, spaces are bright and uncluttered, allowing incoming sunlight and the interplay of air and shade to become the primary 'ornamentation'.

Sustainable Coastal Living

Beyond its nostalgic cues, the design is firmly anchored in sustainable principles. Considered shading strategies protect openings from harsh subtropical sun, while lightweight construction aids thermal responsiveness. Water-harvesting features and efficient fixtures address the environmental realities of coastal living, and robust marine-grade finishes ensure a low-maintenance building envelope. In essence, the home’s design merges the breezy informality of the classic beach shack with a forward-looking approach to comfort and sustainability.
