The Broadbeach Waters House conceptualises a coastal residence where materiality is the primary narrative driver. This design explores the use of an extensive palette of vertical timber cladding, creating a structure that feels integrated with its environment through a rhythmic, tactile language. By utilising a singular, dominant material, the architecture recedes into the tropical landscape, offering a warmth that characterises modern high-end residential design.
The choice of timber dictates a vertical geometry that is carried from the street-facing facade through to the internal joinery. This material-led approach prioritises longevity and a sense of permanence, allowing the built form to age gracefully alongside the established gardens. By focusing on the sensory depth of raw materials - stone, timber, and glass - the concept achieves a level of architectural integrity that reflects the unique environmental conditions of the Gold Coast.
A rhythmic use of vertical timber cladding provides a soft but defined presence within the suburban streetscape. The Street Presence
Vertical timber cladding creates a rhythmic and defined presence within the suburban streetscape. This singular material application provides a modern interpretation of the coastal bungalow, where the honesty of the timber is allowed to dictate the aesthetic.
Complemented by an intentional selection of tropical flora, the facade relies on clean architectural lines and the natural variation of the wood to provide visual interest.
The rear of the residence prioritises the outdoor lifestyle, where the boundaries between built form and landscape are intentionally blurred. The Rear Sanctuary
The rear of the residence is defined by a commitment to the outdoor lifestyle. A broad timber deck acts as a natural extension of the internal living zones, leading toward a pool area where the materiality shifts to warm, textured stone.
This spatial arrangement takes advantage of the Queensland climate, allowing for an environment where the boundaries between the built form and the landscape are intentionally blurred.
The Alfresco Threshold
Expansive sliding glazing allows the interior living zone to connect directly with the timber alfresco deck. The sheer scale of the opening at the threshold helps dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. The linear progression of the decking boards draws the eye toward the pool and surrounding tropical landscaping, emphasizing the depth of the site.

Large-scale sliding doors allow the interior floor plan to merge entirely with the deck, facilitating a seamless visual flow. Internal Connectivity
From the deck, the kitchen and dining areas are revealed as the functional heart of the home. The use of natural stone and timber within the interior palette mirrors the external finishes, creating a cohesive visual narrative that flows through the entire site.
This openness provides the opportunity for effortless hosting while remaining visually connected to the external environment and the pool.
Precision is found in the kitchen’s joinery, where warm timber tones are balanced by the tactile nature of the stone island. The Culinary Space
Precision is found in the kitchen’s joinery, where warm timber tones are balanced by the cool, tactile nature of the stone island. The layout is designed to manage the functional requirements of daily life, with ample storage allowing the focus to remain on the material quality.
The stone extends to the splashback, providing a durable and sophisticated backdrop to the open-plan living area.
The Upper Terrace
On the upper level, a private balcony provides a secluded vantage point over the neighbourhood. The choice of materials remains consistent, with timber cladding and glass balustrades allowing the view of the surrounding palm trees to remain the primary focus. This space functions as a quiet retreat, offering a moment of pause away from the main social hubs of the lower floor.

The master suite prioritises a soft, neutral palette to create a calm atmosphere where natural light dictates the mood throughout the day. The Master Suite
The master bedroom prioritises a soft, neutral palette to create a calm atmosphere. Large windows frame the tropical canopy outside, pulling the greenery into the room and reflecting the commitment to site-led design.
It is a space designed for rest, where the simplicity of the layout allows the natural light to dictate the mood throughout the day.
Floor-to-ceiling tiling in a warm, textured finish gives the ensuite a palpable sense of depth, bathing the freestanding tub in soft, natural light. The Master Ensuite
Floor-to-ceiling tiling in a warm, travertine finish gives the ensuite a palpable sense of depth. A high-level ribbon window facilitates privacy while framing the sky and the tops of palm trees, bathing the freestanding tub in soft, natural light. The floating timber vanity provides a grounded element against the stone surfaces, completing the sanctuary-like feel of the master wing.
A Refined Outcome
The success of The Broadbeach Waters House concept lies in its material-led philosophy. By embracing the warmth and texture of timber, the design demonstrates how architecture can feel both sophisticated and grounded. The result is a study in coastal luxury that celebrates the unique sensory qualities of its location through functionality, longevity, and design integrity.
