Palm Beach Pavilion

A programmatic study of privacy and shared family rhythms

Brett McDonald · Principal Architect · 2025

The Palm Beach Pavilion is a programmatic response to the pragmatic shift toward multi-generational living on the Gold Coast. This design concept explores the high-end secondary dwelling as a sophisticated architectural pavilion, balancing the requirement for close-knit family support with the necessity of individual autonomy.

Through a shared language of textured render and rhythmic timber, the pavilion conceptualises the overall design integrity of the property while offering a private sanctuary. This model provides a sustainable path for families to navigate modern pressures on a single site without compromising the individual’s need for retreat.

The Independent Threshold

A prominent timber gate and matching entry door provide a tactile point of contact, framed by solid white masonry and layered landscaping. Access to the secondary pavilion is facilitated via a dedicated side-entry path, allowing for an autonomous arrival sequence that bypasses the primary residence.

This deliberate separation allows for a dignified transition from the street to a secluded domestic environment, acknowledging the importance of privacy in a multi-generational household.

The Social Heart

The outdoor alfresco zone acts as the primary social bridge, designed as a common ground for the various generations to gather when the choice is made to do so. A deep roofline extends over a timber-decked area, featuring a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a stone-clad BBQ and preparation space.

This zone functions as the connective tissue of the site - a space for shared meals and interaction that links the two dwellings. Large-scale sliding glass doors allow the internal living areas to spill out into this central hub, facilitating a natural indoor-outdoor flow.

Refined Culinary Proportions

The primary kitchen is defined by a central island of veined stone, providing a grounded focal point for daily rituals. Minimalist white cabinetry is balanced by the warmth of overhead timber accents, while a low-profile splashback window frames views of the side garden, drawing soft light into the workspace. The open-plan layout maintains a direct visual connection to the outdoor living area, allowing for movement and conversation between the various zones of the home.

The Private Retreat

The primary master is designed as a light-filled sanctuary, where large-format windows frame the surrounding greenery and filter the coastal sun. Solid timber flooring provides a grounding sensory element underfoot, while a neutral palette of soft linens and textured upholstery encourages a sense of calm and retreat.

The spatial arrangement prioritises a feeling of volume and openness, making the room a dignified space for quiet contemplation throughout the day.

Secondary Suite Refinement

The bedroom within the secondary pavilion is designed with an emphasis on warmth and sensory comfort, featuring a full-height timber-veneer feature wall that grounds the sleeping zone. Large windows frame views of the side gardens, drawing in soft, filtered light while maintaining a high degree of visual privacy.

This room serves as a secondary sanctuary within the pavilion, providing a spacious environment that reflects the same level of finish and consideration as the primary suite.

Secondary Wellness

The pavilion’s secondary bathroom represents a commitment to wellness through a meticulous selection of materials, featuring floor-to-ceiling marble-veined tiling and a bespoke timber vanity. A freestanding bathtub is positioned to take advantage of the garden outlook, while the walk-in shower adds a layer of refinement.

By prioritising high-end finishes and a feeling of volume, the architecture transforms a functional utility into a restorative daily experience, reflecting the quality of the secondary home.

Multi-Generational Longevity

The success of this multi-generational model lies in the ability to support social connection at the communal heart while respecting the necessity of independence through separate access. By investing in high-quality materials and a cohesive design language across both dwellings, the architecture facilitates a lifestyle of ease and legacy. This approach provides a solution for families to navigate modern pressures together, offering a private, high-end environment for every member of the household.
