The intent for this Chevron Island design is a response to the dual requirements of privacy and transparency within a high-density canal-front environment. Architecture provides the opportunity to create a secluded retreat, utilising a facade that moderates light and visibility through vertical timber screening and off-form concrete mass. This approach facilitates a sense of enclosure while maintaining a deliberate orientation toward the wide water views of the Gold Coast canals.
The interior layout is designed to facilitate a lifestyle centred on the sub-tropical climate, where living spaces are organised to support fluid movement between the social core and the external alfresco zones. By prioritising material longevity and a restrained palette of natural stone and timber, the environment suggests a calm, restorative atmosphere that prioritises the science of experience over transient aesthetic trends.
The facade establishes a rhythmic dialogue between solid concrete mass and permeable timber elements, creating a sense of private sanctuary while maintaining a connection to the streetscape. The Streetscape Elevation
The facade establishes a rhythmic dialogue between solid off-form concrete panels and permeable vertical timber battens. This structural arrangement provides the opportunity for natural ventilation and dappled light to permeate the internal spaces while maintaining a secure boundary.
The overall intent is a modern interpretation of a coastal residence, where the geometry of the roofline and the texture of the materials harmonise with the surrounding environment.
Strategic lighting and a curated path of floating concrete steps orient the arrival experience toward the textured warmth of the timber entrance. The Arrival Experience
Illuminated floating concrete steps orient the arrival toward a tall timber pivot door, creating a clear sense of transition from the public realm. The visibility of the internal timber staircase through expansive glazing suggests a vertical connection between levels, while the integration of sub-tropical plantings reinforces the connection to the site.
This sequence of movement provides the opportunity for a formal yet natural entry experience.
Internal Living and Poolside Terrace
Large-format black-framed sliding doors facilitate a seamless transition from the internal lounge to the poolside terrace. The layout prioritises an indoor-outdoor lifestyle, where the physical boundaries of the living area are extended to the water’s edge. The use of consistent flooring materials across both zones creates a visual continuity that expands the perceived scale of the ground floor.
Large-format sliding doors facilitate a seamless transition from the internal living zones to the poolside terrace, responding to the subtropical climate. Framing the Vista
Positioned to frame the canal views, the kitchen utilises a large marble island bench and timber cabinetry to ground the open-plan space. The placement of the work surfaces allows for a constant visual connection to the pool and waterway, while black pendant lighting provides a vertical element that defines the zone. The design provides a functional outcome where food preparation is integrated into the broader social life of the home.
The kitchen is positioned to frame views of the water while utilising a palette of natural stone and timber to harmonise with the broader architectural language.
The master suite is positioned to capture expansive water views, utilising a restrained palette of timber and neutral textiles to foster a calm, restorative environment. The Master Retreat
The master suite is positioned on the upper level to capture expansive views across the canal. A palette of light timber flooring and matching wall panelling provides a tactile warmth that facilitates a sense of rest.
Floor-to-ceiling glass doors provide the opportunity to access a private balcony, further extending the living space toward the environment and allowing for natural breezes to cross-ventilate the room.
Natural stone surfaces and timber cabinetry are utilised to create a tactile, spa-like atmosphere, with brass fixtures providing a refined finish to the wet areas. A Restorative Retreat
The bathroom design suggests a spa-like atmosphere through the use of floor-to-ceiling stone tiles and a freestanding bathtub. Brass tapware provides a refined contrast to the muted tones of the stone and timber cabinetry, while strategic window placement allows for natural light without compromising privacy.
The layout facilitates a functional yet tactile experience grounded in architectural honesty.
The Coastal Synthesis
The success of this design lies in its ability to balance the weight of concrete with the warmth of timber, resulting in a residence that responds directly to its coastal context. The design intent is to provide the opportunity for a lifestyle of quiet sophistication, where the architecture facilitates a deep connection to the water while maintaining the integrity of a private retreat.
